Coffee and Me

Saturday, September 29, 2007

I have always been a tea person. I hated the bitterness of coffee and always dreaded the moment when I am served the beverage when I'm a guest somewhere. With "Teh Tarik*" and "Teh Halia*" who needs anything else? Right?... Wrong!

I discovered StarBucks, Coffee Bean and the likes of them. And then, I'm hooked. What with Cappuccino, Mochacino and all the other "cino(s)", I could not get enough. That's the start of the Coffee vice. I just got to have it daily. One in the morning to start my day, one in the afternoon after lunch and a cuppa after dinner. And nope, I'm not one of those that can't sleep after my caffeine. Don't believe me? Watch me have my drink and see me snore in the next hour or so...heheh.. drive my mom nuts....heheh

Since I can't afford to hang out all the time at Starbucks and the other joints, to economize, I always look for those three, four or even five in one coffee mix. They are so easy to make. Just boil water and you have a delicious coffee latte in seconds. Yummy...

But you know who makes the best coffee? My darling hubby, that's who! He makes it with just the right bitterness, the right sweetness and the right creaminess.. plus... with lots and lots of love...

Cheerio folks ;-)

Notes:
Teh Tarik = White Tea done the traditional way (you just got to have it)
Teh Halia = Hot White Tea with Ginger

Pstt: Do you know??
A good computer software store would have tax software as well as utility software easily available. The concept behind such stores is to have useful software like web server software etc at hand.

Best Posts SEO Meme

Mariuca just tagged me on this wonderful new meme. Let's see if this SEO theory works :-)

Start tag

This is based on the SEO theory that links to posts inside your blog are more important than links to your home page. I have selected three posts I want to promote along with my site’s name. You will do the same thing.

Keep it simple and spread our good work around to both share and build some ratings! Pick three posts that you feel are your best or those you simply want to promote. Your site name is listed with your 3 selected posts beneath.

Once you have your post up: Add the sites and post links of the folks you tagged onto your post. Try to add the site and post links to anyone involved to maximize the effectiveness.

Tag a minimum of 5 people! Try your best not to double tag people so it will spread better! Please actually read the posts from everyone so you can see some really good work from our beloved blogging friends! Make your title a little different from mine to avoid repetitive titles. Please try maintain some friendly updates to your post too.

Water Spout in Singapore

Oh dear! This post is sooo outdated but I thought I document here anyway for my own reference and serve as a reminder to yours truly to read the newspaper more often to keep me updated of news back in the homeland.

And so the story goes....

Wayyyyyy (see the emphasis on the time frame??) back on 25 May 2007, it was reported that a tornado water spout was seen on the eastern part of Singapore. According to the report from Channel NewsAsia, it was seen around 2.30pm and lasted for 15minutes! The waterspout could be seen in several areas including Chai Chee, East Coast Park, Suntec City and Potong Pasir. It also seemed that this was not the only occurrence. Last August, a waterspout was also spotted off the coast of Sentosa Island.

See the video here

In a country when natural disasters almost never happened, this is really scary stuff although according to the National Environment Agency (NEA), waterspouts are not rare as there are actually several sightings each year and they are the result of intense thunderstorms.

Hmm... still scary stuff to me...

Swindled at Petrol Station

I got this in my email today and thought it served better being posted here instead of the regular email forwarding.

My girlfriend was "swindled" of her paid petrol at the Taman Puchong Prima Station.

The modus operandi:
Two guys at the station, while one waited near the payment counter, the other one holding two empty tanks waited nearby the pump station.

While my girlfriend moved towards the payment counter, the guy near the payment counter unintentionally cut her queue and made a minimum payment at the counter (eg; Rm5). After paying, knowing which pump station my girlfriend came from, he quickly signaled his friend with the empty tanks to go to the pump station. When my girlfriend paid, the cashier activated the pump for the paid amount. Before she could walk back to her car, the guy had already started filling up the petrol at my girlfriend's pump.

When she asked what he was doing, he simply showed her the receipt saying that he had paid. Not knowing what was going on, she just waited for him to finish. The meter showed the exact amount that she has paid. She realized something was amissed. When she lifted the pump for her turn, no petrol came out. The guy has swindled her paid petrol. Eventually she found out that the guy paid RM5 for another pump, and used hers which she paid RM50 instead.

She complained to the petrol attendant but that guy just turned a deaf ear, saying it was not his fault and asked my girlfriend to chase after that two guys! What the f*#@? Is that how you trained your staff to be helpful to your customers?!! It's giving a bad image to your station. He kept on saying that he would lose if he gave her back what she paid. Then who's paying back what she lost?? After 30mins of argument and with the help of other customers and asking to see the CCTV, the attendant finally gave in.

I've already complained to the Petronas via their website, not sure whether they are going to do anything about it until something really bad happen! (Malaysian Style...sighhh! )

Luckily her car was locked and not robbed of her valuables by the guy waiting at the pump. REMEMBER to always lock your car even though you are away for a second.

Pass this on ...

Kids on Leash

Wednesday, September 26, 2007

My hubby was people watching today from the office window when he called out to me to see this father (or was it grandfather) with a child of probably three on a leash.

I was impressed. I always thought it was a good idea to have that kind of control on a roving toddler. I mean, it will give them freedom to roam free but yet we have total control of how far they can go. It is a definite "must-have" gadget if ever I have kids.

With so many sick minded people around, we need to protect our children even more nowadays. Look at poor Nurin (Alfatihah). The kid was just eight. The future that she might have had. I hope they catch the bastard fast and send him to the gallows - and that is being kind!

Back to the leash-ing business though, I know some of of you parents out there might see it as a negative thing. You might even think I'm crazy to want to put my kids (when and if they materialise, InsyAllah) on leashes like a dog. Look at this way, I rather see them on a leash then having to page for them at a shopping complex simply because I am "scared" of what other people might say. I saw the looks on some mothers' faces and the way they were shaking their heads as they see that kid on the leash but I salute the guardian as he totally ignored the look of disapproval on their faces. What's important is the safety of the child not what other people think. Kudos to you Uncle :-)

In conclusion, kids on leash works for me. Does it work for you?

You Make Me Smile Award

Tuesday, September 25, 2007

It is always nice to make someone smile. It makes my heart glow and makes me smile in the process as well. I guess what they say is true - A smile is contagious and when you smile the whole world smile with you.

Having said that, I would like to thank Mariuca, my new online catty friend, for awarding me with this nice little badge, which I will proudly display on my side column :-)

I've always been a smiler myself and if I can spread the smile around, more power to me..heheh

And now I would like to award this lovely award to Melody for posting such a "lovely" image and making me smile every time I see it ;-)... although I can never multitask that way. "Yak Yak" time is very single task work for me...lolz

Home Improvements

Home improvements can be a drag sometimes. I especially hate the mess while the work is going on. However, and I must stress this, I LOVE home improvement work when it is done right as the home will be completely transformed and it's like having a new house minus the move!

A friend of mine had the right idea when "extending" her house. She added a conservatory which was just beautiful that I fell in love with the idea as well. It might just be the thing to do with our house (when we get one, that is).

Anglianhome.co.uk has very nice selections with a variety of era range. I mean, who would not fall in love with this design?

with the interior looking like this?

Ahh simply beautiful.. and with their ten years warranty and with more than thirty-six years of experience, the pricing is definitely a bargain.

How I wish they have a branch here..heheh

What's on your desktop?

Haha.. another week, another tag. This week is all about "What's on your desktop". Well here's mine..

Very neat eh Melody? I personally don't like a cluttered desktop as I would hate it when I can't find my data immediately. Normally my desktop would always have a black background and very minimal application's shortcut. I use my desktop primarily as a temporary storage area. At the end of the day, all shortcut get deleted. Thanks for the tag ;-)

My Desktop Free View Instruction:
A. Upon receiving this tag, immediately perform a screen capture of your desktop. It is best that no icons be deleted before the screen capture so as to add to the element of fun. You can do a screen capture by:
  1. Going to your desktop and pressing the Print Scrn key (located on the right side of the F12 key).
  2. Open a graphics program (like Picture Manager, Paint, or Photoshop) and do a Paste (CTRL + V).If you wish, you can “edit” the image, before saving it.
  3. Post the picture in your blog. You can also give a short explanation on the look of your desktop just below it if you want. You can explain why you preferred such look or why is it full of icons. Things like that.
  4. Tag five of your friends and ask them to give you a Free View of their desktop as well.
  5. Add your name to this list of Free Viewers with a link pointing directly to your Desktop Free View post to promote it to succeeding participants

Now, let me take a peek at your desktop background.

Pstt: Do you know??

My New Look

Saturday, September 22, 2007

How do you like the new look for my blog? I've had the old one for some time now and I thought a change was in order.

I like the cleaner look this template brings and the broad main and side content columns make it easier on the eyes as it looks less cluttered.

Although I'm still tweaking here and there, I believe I will stick to this look for a while. Hope you like it too :-)

Payday Loan

Who does not need cash fast?? Raise up your hands. Hmm. I thought so :-)

You know the saying, money can't get you happiness? I'm all for it but having money sure help with achieving happiness fast, don't you agree?

Still at the topic of money, do you know how long it takes to apply for loan nowadays. All of them require ridiculous amount of time to process. Put it this way, if I already have the money now, I would not need any loan, would I?

Payday Loan Rescue is different though. Their online application requires only a few hours to approve provided the information you give is correct especially your contact number. This is great for in between pay days too as they have smaller loan amount as well, as low as $100! You don't even need a full-time job to apply for for a PayDay Loan.

Awesome right? Check out more of their services at their website.

Blogging to Fame

Your Own Store Online

Wednesday, September 19, 2007

A friend of mine is great at making costume jewelery. She would make us special tricklet for our birthdays and they would always be so unique and personalised. So I suggested that she start selling them online - you know for extra pocket money.

Setting up the website was easy but we wanted a professional ecommerce software that provided shopping cart which not only provided payment by credit cards but also paypal. We found the perfect solution with a Shopping cart software provided by Ashop Commerce. We also chose it for six reasons:

  1. Affordability
  2. Ease of use
  3. Great technical support and customer service
  4. SEO optimised
  5. Customized designs
  6. Total solution which include secure hosting and free email.
What's really caught our eye was the ten days free trial without requiring credit card. Who can resist such an offer?

My friend now is set for her online business.

Are you a Genius??

Also for some reason, I can't get her to move onscreen, so please click on her and you'll see the full picture moving. Sorry about that.

If you see this lady turning in clockwise you are using your right brain.
If you see it the other way, you are using left brain.
Some people do see both ways, but most people see it only one way.
If you try to see it the other way and if you do see, your IQ is above 160 which is almost a genius.

THIS IS NOT A JOKE. BOTH DIRECTIONS CAN BE SEEN.

Pstt: I can only see one direction, does that make me a bimbo?...lol

Psst: By the way, do you know only those advertising agencies that provide internet marketing solutions keeping up with the new search engine marketing or sometime called the search engine optimizing techniques, are successful today. It is time the hoi polloi realizes that there is a difference between advertising and seo advertising.

Lessons in Life

1. First Important Lesson - Cleaning Lady

During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions until I read the last one: "What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?"Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the
leaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50's, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade.

"Absolutely, " said the professor. "In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say "hello."

I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

2. Second Important Lesson - Pickup in the Rain

One night, at 11:30 p.m., an older African American woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rain storm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car. A young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960's. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance! e and put her into a taxicab.

She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a knock came on the man's door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A special note was attached.

It read:
"Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband's bedside just before he passed away... God bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others."

Sincerely,
Mrs. Nat King Cole

3. Third Important Lesson - Always remember those who serve.

In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him.

"How much is an ice cream sundae?" he asked. "Fifty cents," replied the waitress.

The little boy pulled is hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it.

"Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?" he inquired.

By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient.

" Thirty-five cents," she brusquely replied.

The little boy again counted his coins. "I'll have the plain ice cream," he said.

The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies..

You see, he couldn't have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.

4. Fourth Important Lesson. - The obstacle in Our Path.

In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way.

Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the
peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many of us never understand!

Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition.

5. Fifth Important Lesson - Giving When it Counts...

Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare & serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister.

I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes I'll do it if it will save her." As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheek. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded.

He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "Will I start to die right away".

Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her.

Most importantly...................
"Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt, and dance like you do when nobody's watching."

Did you feel the tremors?

Monday, September 17, 2007

I was over in Singapore when the earthquake hit Indonesia. I did not feel anything that evening although there were people who reported feeling giddy after the tremors hit their flat and actually send video footage to the media after seeing objects like ceiling fans, ceiling lights, and hanging objects shaking for no apparent reason. It was quiet scary to hear that the office building where I used to work was also affected.

My aunt who was praying, felt the tremors and her body was shaking but the poor dear was not aware of what was happening and thought that she was developing Parkinson disease instead. She was still in shock when her daughter came in and told her what happened. When she related to story to my mom, she was laughing about it.

Seriously though, I hope nothing like the 2004 Tsunami ever happened again. It was so tragic to lose so many lives like that. My prayers and sympathies to all involved.

Good to be Back

The trip back to Singapore was great. Did some shopping and eating out with mommy, met up with my CNC Club (short for Chicken Noodle Club), did more shopping, met up with some relatives, more shopping, call some friends and what else, more shopping, lolz.

It feels good to be back though. I missed my hubby, my kitties and even my bed! It's good to be home :-)

Can't stay away

Wednesday, September 12, 2007

I am currently back in my hometown, sunny Singapore. There's no PC at my mom's place and I thought it was a good excuse to rest my fingers from typing. I thought I can stay away. I guess I was wrong. Hehehe.

The Better English??

Friday, September 7, 2007

With my pathetic English.... this ought to make life much easier....lol

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.

Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.

Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.

By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".

During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensi bl riten styl.

Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.

Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.

If zis mad you smil, pleas pas on to oza pepl.

Have a great weekend everyone :-)

My new camera phone

Thursday, September 6, 2007

I mean "Going" to be my new camera phone that is..heheh..

It is the Sony Ericsson K810 Cybershot-mobile phone. This is what I am targeting for with my "paid to blog" earnings. The price is not that expensive at RM1115 but I want to use my earned money so that I got something to show for it. Plus, I'm going to use it for blogging after all.

Cloudy days ahead

Monday, September 3, 2007

WOW! Look at the sky. It looks like it's going to drop any time. This is the view from my 10th storey apartment this morning. True enough, it rained cats and dogs till evening.. So cold!

Curtains or Blinds??

Saturday, September 1, 2007

The fasting month is coming which means Hari Raya is fast approaching. This year would probably be the time to change those curtains hanging in the rooms. Hubby darling has and will always hate anything to do with curtains, from taking them off to putting them back on again, so it will always be a solo undertaking for me.

Perhaps I'll looked into blinds or shades this year. They now come in a variety of style and no longer looked too office-y, you know what I mean.

This one for instance from GuaranteedBlinds.com would sure looks nice and cozy enough for the kitchen area.

And this one from their Classic wood collection would look very beautiful in the family area.

The more I think about it, the more the idea is growing on me.. hmm..curtains or blinds?? Let me sleep on it...
